SubUrbia
East Carolina Playhouse - Winter 1997
My design for SubUrbia was driven by location. The play is set in the parking lot of an upscale neighborhood’s convenience store, and so the lighting sought to capture this feel. Great care was taken to dissolve the lighting into the background so as not to upstage this delicate story. Even when the director staged one of the songs in the play as a kind of music video complete with a real motorcycle driving across the stage, the lighting remained firmly anchored in theatrical reality taking its cues from time of day, and motivated light sources while gently shifting focus around the stage.
